What's a Flower Subscription?

Simply put, a flower subscription entitles the customer to fresh flowers all summer long. Each week or every other week, simple garden bouquets accompanied by an informative card about the flowers arrive on Monday or Friday (your choice). Our large arrangements come in a rustic galvanized French vase already arranged; our smaller bunches are gathered in a simple mason jar. Vases collected on delivery of fresh arrangements. You don't even need to dump the older flowers (unless you want to)!

Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) is growing across the country as some people choose local organic produce that’s fresh over food that has traveled hundreds or thousands of miles. CSA’s offer customers a “share” in the land for a subscription price, providing fresh food weekly. Although we do not offer produce, we operate under the same principle. Our customers have a steady supply of fresh flowers, food for the soul that’s sure to produce a smile, throughout the growing season.

Why Try Sunflower Hill?

* We’re local. Our flowers are fresh – delivered within 24 hours of being cut!

* You love fresh garden flowers, but don’t have the space for a cutting garden.

* You love fresh garden flowers, but don’t have the time to keep a fresh bouquet in your home weekly.

* Nothing says summer better than fresh garden flowers. And in coastal Maine, we need to squeeze out every piece of summer we can!

* No chemical pesticides or synthetic fertilizers are used on our flowers. (We do add floral preservative in our water for our arrangements however).

* Florists and grocery store flowers certainly have their pluses, but there are drawbacks too. Many of the flowers have been cut days and sometimes weeks in advance of sale. Although flowers from grocery stores may be a little bit cheaper, the selection is not as varied, or fresh, as garden flowers. Florists have a bit more variety, but cost and delivery charges are higher.

Delivery

Select your delivery day of Monday or Friday. On your chosen day, we deliver your flowers. Flowers are conditioned and most should last for the week. Those that will be short-lived will be indicated on the information card. The following week, when we deliver fresh flowers, we collect the vase and dead flowers! No dealing with wilted bunches or vase washing! That’s our job!

Caring for Your Flowers

* Add fresh, warm water every other day, if possible. At the very least, an extra drink of warm water mid-week will be necessary.
* Keep away from direct sun or heat. It will cause the arrangements to decline prematurely.
* Avoid placing flowers near fruits or vegetables. Many emit ethylene gas which may also wilt them prematurely.
* Some flowers may fade, shrivel, or begin to drop petals after five to seven days.

About Our Flowers

Well-established perennial beds are the backbone of our garden. Each spring an intensive planting of annuals produce cascades of color. Combined, Sunflower Hill produces over 50 varieties of abundant blooms June through September. And of course, our favorites are sunflowers! We try different types of sunflowers and wherever possible, we choose pollenless varieties.

Our flowers are cut and delivered within 24 hours and are comprised of common and unusual varieties. We take extra care of our blooms by conditioning our flowers - all leaves are stripped from the stems, we "rest" the flowers in buckets of water in a dark area, dip stem ends to kill bacteria, and add floral preservative to our vase water. These steps help to add longer life to the bouquet.

Mixed bouquets may include:

Mid to late June: Iris, Daisy, Cornflower, Amsonia, Dame’s Rocket, Baptisia, Coreopsis, Dianthus, Sweet William, Salvia, Veronica, Catmint

Mid July: Zinnia, Snapdragon, Sunflower, Liatrus, Yarrow, Ageratum, Heliopsis, Larkspur, Lady Bells, Verbena

Mid August-Mid September: Early Autumn: Black-eyed Susan, Phlox, Sunflower, Snapdragon, Zinnia, Cosmos, Gloriosa Daisy, Helianthus, Ironweed, Purple Coneflower, Aster, Butterfly Bush

What Happens If...

We're gone during one of our delivery weeks? Let us know in advance and you can choose to have the delivery sent to someone else, change the delivery date, or we will pause the deliveries for you. You do not need to pay for weeks you do not use.

We can't subscribe to the end of the season? We'll adjust to your schedule. As mentioned above, you do not need to pay for weeks you do not use.

We're not home when deliveries are scheduled? When we set up your delivery schedule, we will talk with you about the best place for delivering the flowers to be sure they remain protected from harsh weather elements.

Nature acts like...well, nature? If an early frost or unforeseen extreme weather event cuts short our delivery schedule, you will be reimbursed. Bloom times are difficult to predict exactly (ah, for a crystal ball!) as some years are cooler, some warmer. But that's our headache - not yours!

The flowers droop? We do everything we can to assure freshness. This includes conditioning flowers (see below "About Our Flowers"), clean vases, and preservative in the water. Our arrangements should last a minimum of five days, most will last longer. Some flowers simply do not cooperate for long vase life. Your information card will let you know which flowers may droop before week's end.

We want a refund? We want you to be happy with your purchase. However, if for some reason you find the quality lacking or you decide you can not continue with the subscription, you may cancel and we will refund your money.
